This weekend I ran my first 5K race. My friend Elaine wanted me to do one with her so I decided to go ahead and try it. I have been running that distance because I am training for a triathlon but hadn't done a race before.
We woke up early and I wasn't even sure what to wear or eat. I was a little nervous and wasn't sure what to expect. We arrived at the race about 30 minutes before it started. As we looked around we realized that we were the minority. Everyone was a young student aging between 19-22. We finally noticed two other women (that looked like us) and went to stand by them. We headed to the starting line and ended up being in the back because all of the students were crowding the front.
After a slow start (it is hard to run fast with people surrounding you) we headed up a huge hill. If any of you have been to Utah Valley University and have seen the hill up to Provo. Well that's the hill. So I decided that my goal was to just run and not stop. I didn't even have a stopwatch to see my speed.
I was happily surprise when I crossed the finish line at 23:20.9. I had run a 7:30 min/mi. I was very pleased with my first run but am sure it won't be as fast in the triathlon.
Here's my official score: 15th out of 127 women.
